Rim shots are used in all genres in drumming. A rim shot is generally high pitched, and is very loud. It can be performed quietly also.

       

       To perform a loud rim shot, hit the center of the drum and the rim at the same time.

       

       To perform a quiet rim shot, hit the edge of the drum and the rim at the same time.

       Rim shots can be used be used to accent notes in snare drumming, or can be used to emphasize down beats.
